Shinjuku Midnight Snack?

Grabbed some onigiri and a weird melon soda. The onigiri was surprisingly good, but the soda... let's just say it was an experience. My question is: what's the weirdest thing you've ever found at a convenience store in a big city like this? I'm betting it's wilder than that melon soda.

honestly the weirdest thing i found was at a Lawsons in Kabukicho, a can of "coffee" that had a little plastic hammer attached to the bottom. you had to smash it to activate some chemical pack inside and it got hot. like self-heating coffee at 1am in a vending machine. tasted like burnt metal but the process was wild

Oh man, Tokyo convenience stores are another level. I once found a whole roasted chicken in a FamilyMart in Shibuya, at like 3 AM. It was surprisingly juicy, but the sheer unexpectedness of it... walking around hungry, then BAM, whole roasted chicken. It was glorious and bizarre all at once. Nothing beats that level of midnight convenience store weirdness.

Seriously?! A whole roasted chicken? That's insane! I've been to a few FamilyMarts in @Tokyo, but never stumbled upon anything that epic. I usually stick to onigiri and maybe some weird green tea KitKat flavor... but a whole roasted chicken at 3 AM? That's a story I'll be telling for years. Makes me rethink my midnight snack strategy. Maybe I should ditch the ramen and just hunt for poultry.

Forget the food, the weirdest thing I grabbed from a Lawsons in Shinjuku was a pack of socks. Striped socks, in a vending machine attached to the store. At 2 AM, when I realized my feet were soaked from the rain, those socks were a lifesaver. Way weirder than any snack I've found.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
