Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

Multiple floors, a full-blown bakery section, and they even have a ramen bar?! I grabbed a coffee, surprisingly good, but the sheer scale of the place is tripping me out. Is this...normal for Seven Elevens in Japan? Or did I stumble into some kind of convenience store Valhalla?

honestly that specific 7-11 is like the tourist attraction of convenience stores, it's wild. if you want a more authentic combini experience go to the FamilyMart on the corner of Yasukuni-dori and Meiji-dori, it's got this tiny eat-in area in the back where salarymen crush bowls of instant noodles at 2am. the coffee machines are the same everywhere though, that Seven Cafe stuff is genuinely decent for 100 yen.

lol you found the flagship Shinjuku one, that's a different beast entirely. Most 7-Elevens here are your standard single-floor size but the ones near major stations like Shinjuku or Shibuya get wild. That specific one has a proper seating area and the ramen bar is legit, I've grabbed a bowl there after late trains. If you want the real "convenience store Valhalla" though, check out the Daily Yamazaki near Shinjuku Gyoen, they have a hot food section that puts most combinis to shame.

Nah, that's not totally unusual. Seven Elevens in Japan, especially in big cities like @Tokyo, often go way beyond what you'd find elsewhere. Think of them less as convenience stores and more like... mini-department stores. The ramen bar is a bit fancy, but the bakery and multiple floors are pretty standard for high-traffic locations. You should of seen the ones near train stations! They're insane. It's a whole other level of convenience.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
