Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital Emergency Room Wait Times?

My grandma needs a check-up at the Shinagawa Hospital, she's not great with crowds or long waits. I've heard Japanese hospitals can have incredibly long wait times, even in emergencies. Anyone know what the average wait time is like in the ER there, specifically? My grandma's kinda frail and I don't want her sitting around for hours. I'm trying to prepare myself so I can manage expectations... and maybe even bring some entertainment.

you can actually check the wait times on their website before you head over. shinagawa hospital has a real-time ER status board online, it updates every 10 minutes or so. just search "shinagawa hospital ER waiting" and itll show you how many people are ahead. i used it last year when my dad had a dizzy spell, we saw it was quiet so we went straight in, waited maybe 20 mins

for a checkup though you're prob better off booking a specific time slot through their online system. the ER is for emergencies, they'll triage your grandma and if she's stable she might wait longer than someone who came in with a chest pain. theres a decent cafe across the street called cafe de la paix if you need to kill time, they have good toast sets

honestly i wouldn't stress too much about shinagawa hospital's ER specifically. it's a big private hospital in a busy area so they're used to handling elderly patients and they're pretty efficient. if it's just a check-up and not an actual emergency, you can actually book an appointment online through their website or by phone, that way you skip the general wait entirely.

the real wait time issue in japan is usually at public hospitals like tokyo metropolitan hiroo, where you can sit for 4+ hours. shinagawa is private and a bit more streamlined. worst case you're waiting 30-60 minutes even without an appointment. bring a book yeah but honestly your grandma will probably be seen faster than you think

yeah shinagawa hospital is actually one of the better ones for this. they have a separate elderly care counter on the ground floor near the main entrance, you don't have to queue with the general crowd. just tell the info desk you're there for a geriatric checkup and they'll direct you there

the ER there is more for actual emergencies anyway, if it's a scheduled checkup you'll be in and out. my aunt goes there for her blood pressure meds and she's usually done within 45 mins even on busy days. bring a snack for the vending machines in the lobby though, the coffee is better than the hospital stuff

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
