Little ninjas, all of them. But today, a kid lost his lucky eraser, a tiny, plastic penguin. He was DEVASTATED. The whole class was searching. It's gotta be around here somewhere. My question is: How common is it for schools in Japan to have a really organized lost-and-found system? I mean, this place is TINY, but the chaos... It's amazing. I'm worried the penguin will never be found.

oh man, the penguin saga. i get it, those little erasers are like sacred objects to kids here. the lost and found system is usually decent but ngl it can get chaotic fast, especially in a smaller school where space is tight. the teacher's desk drawer or the shelf near the shoe lockers is prob the best bet, but i've seen stuff fall behind the blackboard or slip into the crack between desks for weeks before someone finds it. if you're brave, check the janitor's closet too, they sometimes stash random stuff there.

Schools here are usually pretty good about that stuff. I'd ask the kid to check the "otoshimono" box near the teacher's office first thing tomorrow, that's the standard spot. If it's not there, have him tell his sensei during morning meeting, they'll often make an announcement. Kids lose erasers all the time, I've seen them turn up in shoe cubbies or wedged under desks weeks later.

Japanese schools, especially elementary ones, tend to have pretty good lost and found. It's not always a super organized system like a numbered-and-logged database, more often it's a designated area, maybe a box or shelf, where things are piled. But they really try to keep track of stuff. The teachers are amazing at that kind of thing. Your little penguin might be there, buried under a mountain of other lost treasures. Check it out tomorrow, I bet it'll turn up. Kids lose stuff constantly. It's part of being a kid. Good luck with the penguin hunt!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
