It was PACKED. Like, seriously buzzing with people grabbing all sorts of weird and wonderful snacks. I got some... questionable-looking fried chicken (it was surprisingly good!), but I'm curious - what's the craziest thing you've ever bought at a convenience store at 3 AM here?

lol the egg sandwich is real, but my weirdest 3 AM grab was a can of warm oshiruko from a vending machine near Golden Gai. sweet red bean soup, basically dessert in a can, hit different when ur freezing outside. also bought a tiny bottle of sake from a Lawson once and the cashier just nodded like it was the most normal thing, which honestly it kinda is out here

Oh man, @Tokyo convenience stores at 3 AM are a whole other level. I once bought a whole grilled squid, still on its skewer, from a FamilyMart. It was surprisingly delicious, but the look on the cashier's face was priceless. They probably thought I was gonna eat it right there on the spot. Almost did.

honestly the real move at 3 AM is the famichiki but u gotta grab it from the hot case near the register, not the pre-wrapped ones. my craziest pickup was prob a bag of frozen edamame and a can of chu-hi from a Lawsons in Shinjuku, ate it standing outside the store like a gremlin. also if ur near the east exit, the 7-Eleven on the corner of Yasukuni-dori has this weird spicy cod roe onigiri that nobody talks about, it's the sleeper hit. skip the squid, that's tourist bait.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
