I've heard Shinagawa Hospital is top-notch, but the reviews are kinda vague on wait times. Anyone know what the average wait is like in the emergency room, especially during peak hours? I'm hoping to avoid a whole day stuck there... it's not exactly a vacation highlight.

honestly, if you can push the checkup to a weekday morning, do it. i've been to shinagawa er twice and both times it was around 3 hours even at 10am. the real killer is weekend evenings when it hits 6+ hours easy

one thing nobody mentions is the self-check-in kiosk near the entrance. use that instead of the main counter if you're just there for a non-emergency checkup. saves you like 30 minutes of standing in line

also there's a decent family mart right across the street if you need snacks or a drink. the hospital cafeteria closes at 7pm sharp and the vending machines inside are overpriced

If you're worried about sitting in Shinagawa ER for hours, you might want to check out a nearby clinic first for something routine. There's a solid internal medicine place called Shinagawa Medical Clinic a few blocks from the station that usually sees walk-ins within an hour, and they'll refer you to the hospital only if it's serious. For ER specifically, I've found that showing up right when they open at 8 AM on a weekday cuts the wait down to about 90 minutes, but Friday evenings are a nightmare with people from the office buildings flooding in.

ngl the other comments are right about the timing but one thing i'd add is if you're just getting a checkup and not an actual emergency, you might not even need the ER. shinagawa has a separate outpatient clinic entrance on the left side of the building. way shorter lines and you can book online in advance sometimes. saves u from sitting with the actual emergencies

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
