Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

Seriously, bigger than some apartments I've seen. They had everything, fresh onigiri, hot meals, even some weird melon-flavored soda I'm kinda scared to try. But the real kicker? They had a whole section dedicated to... K-pop merchandise. I'm talking albums, photo cards, the works. It was completely unexpected. My question is: What's the deal with the intense K-pop presence in this particular 7-Eleven? Is this a common thing in Shinjuku, or is this one a special case? It was kinda awesome but also very strange...

honestly that specific 7-eleven is kind of famous locally for doing that. it's the one near the kabukicho entrance right? they've been doing k-pop stuff for like two years now, i think the store manager is just a big fan or something. most konbinis in shinjuku stick to the standard layout but that one's always been a bit extra with the themed displays

the melon soda is fine by the way, it's just soda. you'll survive

yeah that's not normal for most 7-elevens, but shinjuku especially around the station has a few that go all out on random stuff. there's one near the east exit that even sells band tees and concert tickets sometimes, i think they just adapt to the crowd passing through

Shinjuku's wild, man. That 7-Eleven sounds like a whole other level. It's not that uncommon to find K-pop stuff in convenience stores in bigger cities in Japan, especially ones that cater to tourists or younger crowds. Think of it as a side hustle, they're selling popular stuff that moves quickly. But a whole section? That's definitely more than usual. Shinjuku is a crazy busy area, so maybe that particular 7-Eleven just figured out a lucrative niche. Could also be a temporary promotion, who knows with those guys!

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
