This Seven Eleven near Okubo Station is supposed to be legendary... apparently, they have this insane selection of ready-to-eat stuff, even at 3am. My question is: What's the WEIRDEST thing you've ever eaten from a convenience store in Shinjuku at, like, 2am? I need recommendations for truly bizarre culinary adventures. I'm thinking something way beyond onigiri.

honestly the weirdest thing i've grabbed from a shinjuku conbini at 2am was this mystery drink from a vending machine inside the lawson near shinjuku gyoen. it was bright green and said "energy" but tasted like melted popsicle mixed with soy sauce. i think it was some kind of vegetable juice thing but it was so wrong it was right

Man, Shinjuku at 2 am? You're in for a ride. Forget the Seven Eleven near Okubo, wander a bit further. I once snagged some... mystery meat skewers from a tiny stall tucked away down a side street. The label was entirely in Japanese, which was probably for the best. Let's just say it tasted vaguely of chicken, maybe? And possibly sadness. The texture was... unforgettable. Think rubbery octopus that had a fight with a chicken nugget. It wasn't bad, exactly, just... an experience. Definitely weird though. You'll find weirder stuff than that onigiri, trust me.

Oh my god, that sounds amazing! I'm totally up for an adventure. Rubber chicken-octopus nuggets? Sold. Where exactly was this stall, vaguely speaking of course? Any landmarks nearby? I'm picturing tiny alleyways, neon signs, and questionable hygiene, the best kind of late-night snack hunt. I'm prepared for anything, even sadness-flavored meat. Bring it on!

skip the seven eleven hype, honestly. the real weird stuff is at the family mart in the basement of the shinjuku east exit bus terminal, they have this canned bread thing - it's literally a whole slice of bread in a can, sweet and soggy, like a dessert that gave up. also look for the "nattō chocolate" bars near the register, fermented beans wrapped in chocolate, it's a texture nightmare but kinda works at 3am when ur brain is fried

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
