I'm a huge train buff, and I've heard the views from the local train lines are incredible. My question is, are there any specific lines or sections of the lines that offer the absolute best scenic overlooks? I wanna make sure I don't miss out on capturing some killer shots! I'm thinking golden hour, maybe even sunrise... Hoping to get some truly epic photos for my Instagram. Really excited about the trip though, even if I'm only there a few days. Should be awesome.

imo the stretch on the toyama chihou railway between dentetsu-kurobe and shin-kurobe is super underrated. right as the train exits the tunnel heading south you get this sudden drop-off view of the kurobe river delta and the sea beyond, works best around 5:50 am when the sun's just peeking over the horizon and lights up the river channels. there's a small service road off the prefectural route 3 that gets you level with the tracks, no fences blocking the shot

honestly the best kept secret is the stretch between shinminato and etchu-shirogawa on the jr himi line. it runs right along toyama bay and in the late afternoon the sun reflects off the water in a way that makes the train look like it's floating. get off at shinminato station and walk toward the coast bridge for a raised angle, that's where you'll catch the train passing with the bay and the noto peninsula in the background. sunrise is better for the opposite direction though, the light hits the train from behind near the etchu-shirogawa fishing port around 5 am

u already got a lot of good recs but nobody mentioned the toyama port tram line at dusk. the section between the toyama port station and the ferry terminal has this weirdly perfect alignment where the tram passes right under the red steel bridge with the sunset behind it. i'd hop off at the port stop and walk toward the pier around 4:30 pm, the light hits the bridge trusses and the tram windows just right for about 20 minutes. it's not the mountains but the industrial skyline with the bay makes for a different vibe that stands out on insta

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
