Kanto High School Food?

I spent the day wandering the grounds, impressive architecture, I must say. But the cafeteria... man, the lunch lines were insane. Took me like, twenty minutes just to get a tray. My question is: are there any decent, less-crowded food options nearby for students who don't want to battle the lunch rush every day?

honestly theres a whole ecosystem of food trucks that park along the canal behind the school around 11:30, they cycle through different ones each day. my favorite is the old guy who does takoyaki with a crispy outside and molten center, he's always there by the second bench. costs like 500 yen for a generous portion and you're back on campus in under ten minutes

The food court in the basement of the department store across from the station is a solid bet. It's about a five minute walk from the main gate, and most of the stalls have a grab-and-go section where you can pick up a bento or a curry pan in under two minutes. The katsu sandwich stand there uses that thick cut bread and the pork is always juicy, it's my go-to when I'm in the area.

If you walk out the main gate and hang a left toward the station, there's a narrow street lined with places that are way faster. I'd skip the chain shops and try a place called Yoshokuya Sato, it's a tiny spot that does omurice and hayashi rice for about 600 yen. The old couple running it move quick because they know most students only have a 30-minute break.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
