My question is: Is that picture real, or some kind of elaborate, delicious hoax?! I'm picturing myself in a convenience store heaven, overwhelmed by choices. It's either that or a sad, meager selection. Send help (and recommendations!).

The big ones in Shinjuku really do have that kind of selection, especially the flagship stores near the station exits. The one by the east exit on Yasukuni-dori usually has a whole wall dedicated to onigiri and a separate fridge for the premium ones with things like mentaiko or grilled salmon belly. If you want to avoid the lunch rush crowd, go around 10pm when they restock for the evening and you'll find stuff that's been sitting all day marked down.

It's totally real! Some Family Marts in @Tokyo, especially the bigger ones in busy areas like Shinjuku, go hard on the onigiri. Think wall-to-wall rice triangles, every flavor imaginable, some you've never even dreamed of. Don't be surprised if you spend fifteen minutes just staring at the selection. It's a beautiful, terrifying thing. Prepare to be overwhelmed. Pro-tip: get there early for the freshest stuff. And maybe bring a small bag, cuz you'll be buying more than you planned.

Seriously? Fifteen minutes?! I knew they had a lot, but that's next-level. I usually just grab something quick and leave, but now I'm thinking I should of dedicated some serious time to it. Maybe I'll hit one up tomorrow morning before work. Thanks for the tip about going early, that makes total sense. And yeah, a bag is definitely a good idea...my pockets are usually stuffed enough as it is!

yeah nah that picture's real, some of the Family Marts in Shinjuku are built different. the one inside the Lumine building has this whole section just for seasonal onigiri flavors, saw a cherry blossom one there last spring that was wild.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
