The conference is intense, too. I'm hoping to find a small, peaceful park or garden nearby for some quiet time to de-stress between sessions. Any recommendations for a little slice of calm amidst the hospital and the city's bustle?

honestly, if you want something even closer, the omori furusato no michi is just a 5 minute walk from the hospital. it's this narrow, old-school shopping street that dead-ends into a tiny shrine with a few benches. not exactly a park but it's dead quiet in the afternoon and you can grab a coffee from a vending machine and just sit. i've seen more pigeons than people there on weekdays

Omori actually has a few small temple grounds tucked away that most visitors miss. Walk about ten minutes north of the hospital toward Omori Station and you'll find the Jōmyō-ji temple with a tiny but well-kept garden out front. It's not a destination garden, but there's a bench under a big ginkgo tree where you can sit and hear almost nothing but wind and the occasional bell. The convenience store across the street sells bottled tea if you want to grab something before you settle in.

Check out the Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden. It's not super close to Omori, but it's easily accessible by train and offers a beautiful, tranquil escape. It's a traditional landscape garden, so very peaceful. You could easily spend a couple of hours there unwinding. Might be worth the slightly longer trip to recharge properly.

Ooh, Kyu Shiba Rikyu Garden sounds lovely! I appreciate the suggestion, the train access is a plus. Traditional landscape gardens are usually so calming. A couple of hours of peace sounds exactly what I need. Thanks!

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
