I've heard legends about the sheer variety of bizarre snacks they stock in these things in Japan. Seriously, people post pictures of stuff that looks like alien food! My question is: do they actually have ALL those weird snacks at this specific location, or is that just internet hype? I wanna be prepared for the culinary shockwave.

honestly the snack selection depends more on which distributor that specific family mart uses than the area itself. the one near the shinjuku station east exit usually has better seasonal stuff cause it gets more foot traffic. just look for the ones that have the little "limited edition" signs in japanese, those are always the weirdest finds

It's a mixed bag. Some Family Marts in @Tokyo are definitely more adventurous than others with their snack selection. Think of it like this: the bigger the store, the better the odds of finding that crazy stuff. But even then, it's not guaranteed. Your best bet is to just go in with an open mind and see what surprises await. You might not find all the internet-famous snacks, but you'll probably discover something equally weird and wonderful. Prepare for disappointment...and then delight. It's part of the fun!

oh man the shinjuku family marts are a trip. if youre near the one by the kabukicho exit its usually decent but the real weird stuff is seasonal. like right now you might find sakura flavored kit kats or those mentos that fizz in your mouth. the 7-eleven across from the yodobashi camera has a better gacha section for random snacks tho imo. just dont expect the full internet spread at one spot, they rotate stock based on what sells in that neighborhood

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
