Kanto's Hidden Curriculum?
Yeah there's actually a pretty big esports scene at some of the international schools in Tokyo now, Kanto included from what I've heard. They do tournaments in stuff like Street Fighter and League, not exactly robot fighting but close enough in spirit. Also a few of the kids I know there are into photo clubs or filmmaking on the side, which is way less structured than you'd think.
Nah, no robot fighting clubs, sadly. Kanto's high schools are notoriously academic-focused. Extracurriculars tend to be... refined. Think more calligraphy clubs, shogi (Japanese chess) tournaments, maybe a classical music ensemble. Some schools have debate teams or volunteer groups focused on community service. It's less "intense extracurriculars" and more "structured leisure activities designed to cultivate well-rounded individuals." It's all very... polished. Don't get me wrong, the kids are probably exhausted, but they're probably finding release in quieter, less outwardly crazy ways than you'd expect.
Honestly, most of the kids here are probably in cram school or doing private tutoring right after class. The real extracurricular is studying for the entrance exams. You might see a few sports clubs or a light music club that practices after school, but it's pretty low-key compared to the academic grind.
