I'm a total night owl and often find myself craving something sweet around midnight. Is the Daily Yamazaki usually stocked late at night with, like, decent pastries or onigiri? I really don't want to end up resorting to vending machine ramen at 3 AM. Hoping for some sugary goodness!

not gonna lie, the yamazaki on yasukuni-dori near the golden gai entrance usually has fresh anpan and melon pan until 1am or so but their fried chicken gets sad fast. if you're craving something sweet that late, walk past the station toward kabukicho and hit the 7-eleven on the corner of meiji-dori, they keep a whole rack of those little mochi ice cream cups and the matcha roll cake is always there. way better than vending machine ramen tbh

The Daily Yamazaki will have pastries and onigiri at midnight, but the quality can be hit or miss that late. If you're craving something sweet, walk over to the 7-Eleven on Yasukuni-dori, just a few minutes from there, their choux cream and pudding selection is usually better stocked even at 3 AM. For a real treat, there's a tiny shop called Patisserie Kayaba near Yotsuya that stays open until 2 AM on weekends, they do a killer mont blanc.

If you're near the Daily Yamazaki on Yasukuni-dori, there's a little crepe stand called Crepe Chouchou that sets up around 11 PM and stays until 2 or 3 AM. They do a really good matcha azuki crepe, and it's fresh, not like the pre-packaged stuff. The Daily Yamazaki itself is fine for basics, but that stand is a solid step up for a sweet fix without going far.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
