They had EVERYTHING. Fresh sushi, hot food, even some weird melon pan that looked suspiciously like a miniature planet. I grabbed a cup of noodles and a strangely enticing bottled coffee. My question is: what's the craziest thing you've ever found in a convenience store here?

the craziest thing i've seen was a whole row of vending machines inside a family mart in roppongi that just sold different types of mentaiko. like spicy cod roe in tubes, jars, even little packets for onigiri. it was 4am and i was half asleep but i bought three different kinds and regretted nothing. also once found a limited edition kit kat flavor that was literally just "sweet potato" and it tasted exactly like a roasted yam. japan's conbini game is just on another level entirely

imo the wildest thing i've seen was a whole section of frozen gyoza at a lawsons in shibuya. like a full freezer just for gyoza brands i've never heard of. grabbed a bag of some "sakura shrimp" ones, cooked em at the hostel kitchen at 1am, and honestly they slapped harder than they had any right to. also saw a tiny tin of whale meat once in a combini near tsukiji but that felt less "crazy" and more "uh that's weird".

Oh man, @Tokyo 7-Elevens are a whole other level. I once found a perfectly acceptable, albeit slightly bruised, whole mango in one at 3am. Like, a full-on, ready-to-eat mango. I nearly cried. I was so unprepared for that level of late-night luxury. It was way better than the sad, wilting bananas they usually have.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
