Shinjuku 7-Eleven Enigma?

Seriously, more floors than my apartment building. I spent a good hour just wandering around, mesmerized by the sheer volume of stuff. But I couldn't find a single decent onigiri. All the usual suspects were sold out. Was it a slow day, or is that normal? I'm genuinely curious. Did I miss some hidden onigiri section? I should've asked someone... maybe next time.

the southern terrace one is a tourist trap honestly, the real move is the 7-11 under the odakyu line tracks near the west exit, it's smaller but they actually restock onigiri through the afternoon. the big ones get picked clean by lunch rushes and tour groups buying the entire shelf of eel onigiri

oh the shinjuku southern terrace one? yeah that one's a beast but it's all flash no substance for actual food tbh. the onigiri go fast because the office workers grab them for lunch, you gotta hit it before 11am if you want the good flavors like mentaiko or tarako. the basement floor has a better selection of prepared foods but it's mostly bentos and salads, not onigiri

Nah, that's totally normal. Those massive 7-Elevens in @Tokyo, especially near major stations, are crazy busy. They sell out of popular stuff fast. Think of it like a small department store, but with way more snack options. You probably just got there at a bad time. Don't worry, you didn't miss a secret onigiri lair, those things disappear quick! Next time, go earlier. Or, you know, just try a different convenience store, there are a lot around there.

Yeah, makes total sense. I should've expected that level of crazy. It was lunchtime, so that probably explains the empty shelves. Guess I was hoping for some kind of legendary, late-night-only onigiri or something... lol. Thanks for the tip though, I'll definitely try going earlier next time. And yeah, there are so many convenience stores around Shinjuku, it's a bit overwhelming!

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
