This place, Apollostion Okubo SS, popped up online, looks kinda...out of the way. Anyone know if they consistently have better prices than other stations nearby? Or is it just a gamble? I don't want to waste time driving around looking for cheaper gas

The Apollostion on Okubo-dori is fine, but honestly most of the independent stations around there are within a few yen of each other. If you're already in the area, the Eneos on Yasukuni-dori closer to Waseda usually has a self-serve lane that's slightly cheaper than the staffed pumps. The real trick is to avoid filling up anywhere near a highway interchange, those places mark up by 10 yen or more.

Tokyo gas prices vary by ward, so Okubo's location in Shinjuku might not be the bargain you're hoping for. I'd check the self-serve Cosmo station on Meiji-dori near Shin-Okubo station, they usually run competitive prices without the detour. Most stations post their per-liter rates on big signs visible from the road, so you can scan a few as you drive rather than hunting for one specific place.

Apollo Station Okubo SS being "out of the way" often means cheaper gas in Tokyo. Gas stations in convenient locations pay more for their prime real estate, passing that cost onto the consumer. It's a gamble, but if you're willing to go a bit off the beaten path, you'll probably save a few yen. Check Gas apps before you go, many will show real-time prices at various stations. Worth a shot, I'd say.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
