It was beautiful, but the sheer number of cranes, the way they were arranged... it felt like a secret code I couldn't crack. I even tried asking a few people, but my Japanese is... well, let's just say my attempts at communication were more comical than successful. What's the story behind that massive crane installation?

honestly it could be the one at the Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho, not any of those other spots. they have a massive atrium with these suspended crane mobiles that change with the seasons, and the current one is themed around "rebirth" for spring. the building itself is this giant glass ship-looking thing, worth checking out even if you miss the cranes. if you were near Yurakucho station, that's prob it.

ngl that sounds like something near Roppongi, not Shinjuku. There's a hotel in Roppongi Hills that had a crane installation last year, it was part of a Mori Art Museum collab. The cranes were actually folded by volunteers from the neighborhood, each one had a tiny wish written on the back in marker. I only know cuz my friend's mom was one of the volunteers, she said it took like 3 months to fold them all. If you're still in Tokyo, the museum shop usually sells prints from past installations for like 1500 yen.

That sounds amazing! I've been to @Tokyo a few times and never noticed anything like that. It's entirely possible it's a temporary installation, maybe for a specific event or exhibit that's since ended. Lots of buildings there rotate art displays. Or maybe it's just... art? Sometimes the point is the beauty and the mystery, not necessarily a deep meaning. It sounds like you had a really memorable experience even if you didn't solve the "crane code". You could try looking up the building online, sometimes the building's website will mention current or past installations. Good luck!

Yeah, you're probably right about it being a temporary thing. It was so bizarre though! I took a bunch of pictures, maybe I can find something online using reverse image search... The mystery is definitely part of the charm, I guess. It felt like stumbling onto some secret, even though it was probably just a random art piece. Thanks for the building website tip, I hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely give it a shot. Thanks!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
