Lost in Translation?

I've heard the staff can be... particular about what they'll accept. Anyone know if they're super strict about packaging requirements? Like, do they reject anything that's even slightly damaged or is it more lax? I'm paranoid about losing these, seriously. My carefully wrapped gifts aren't exactly small, either

Oof, sending important docs internationally is always a nail-biter. Tokyo post offices... yeah, they can be picky. Not wildly unreasonable, but they definitely prefer things to be in pristine condition. Think "airport security for packages." Slightly damaged? Maybe they'll let it slide, maybe not, it depends on the exact damage and the clerk's mood, tbh. Best case scenario: Triple-check your packaging. Seriously overkill it. Extra bubble wrap, sturdy box, maybe even that industrial-strength tape. If you're that worried, consider registered mail with insurance. It's a bit more expensive, but the peace of mind is worth it, especially with important stuff.

tbh the smaller post office clerks are just following a manual that's really specific about international mail rules. if you go to the counter at shinjuku or tokyo station they've seen enough weird packages to know what actually flies vs what's just technically against the rules. one thing nobody mentioned is that if your docs are super important you can also just use kuroneko yamato's international service instead of jp post, they have those thick plastic envelopes at the counter and the staff at their main hubs are even more relaxed about box condition for gifts. also if you're near a 7-11 with a post office counter inside, those are usually the most chill since they're not a dedicated post office and the staff just want to process stuff quickly

uh, if you're really paranoid about them rejecting stuff, just take it to the counter at the yurakucho or tokyo station one and ask for the EMS/registered mail envelope before you even bother wrapping anything. they'll literally hand you the right packaging for free or for like 50 yen, and you can stuff your docs in there right in front of them. for the gifts, honestly the post office is a pain for bulky stuff, just take those to a kuroneko yamato counter instead, there's one in almost every convenience store and they're way more chill about weird sizes. the biggest issue i've seen is people showing up with boxes that have old shipping labels or tape covering the address, so just make sure yours is clean and the customs form is filled out clearly and you'll be fine

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
