A 30th birthday in Tokyo deserves something that feels like an occasion. I'd skip the typical dinner-and-drinks route and book a private omakase experience at a place like Sushi Iwa in Ginza, it's tiny, maybe eight seats, and the chef will remember your husband's name by the end of the night. For the daytime, rent a motorboat on the Sumida River through a service like Tokyo Cruise, you get a private captain for an hour or two and you'll see the skyline from a completely different angle, it's surprisingly affordable for what it is.

For after dinner, walk over to Bar High Five in Ginza, it's a small basement spot with no menu and the bartender will make you something based on what you tell him you like. The cocktails are some of the best in the city and it feels like a real discovery, not a photo op. March evenings can still be crisp so a light coat is smart.

for a 30th in Tokyo you gotta lean into the contrast vibe. day trip to Enoshima is solid, you get the sea, the temple, and that random observation tower. then head back to Shinjuku for dinner, hit up Nakajima for their insane sardine set lunch if you can swing it, but for dinner I'd book Sushi Sho Masa in Roppongi, it's small and feels like a secret.

for a bar after, Golden Gai is cliche but if you hit up Bar Plastic Model it's got this weird retro toy vibe that feels special without trying too hard. or if you want something sleeker, The SG Club in Shibuya does killer cocktails and the speakeasy entrance is fun. tbh March weather is unpredictable so have a backup plan if it rains.

honestly for a 30th I'd go a little more low key and personal. book a morning at the teamLab Planets thing, it's super immersive and you can walk through water and stuff, feels like a different planet. then grab lunch at a standing sushi bar in Tsukiji, like Daiwa Sushi, it's chaotic but the toro is unreal.

for dinner I'd actually recommend a kaiseki place like Kikunoi in Akasaka, it's a proper multi-course experience and they do an English menu if you need it. after that head to the Park Hyatt's New York Bar for a nightcap, yeah it's cliche from Lost in Translation but the view of the city at night is genuinely stunning and they do a mean whisky highball. March might still be chilly so bring a jacket for the rooftop.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
