Anything special today? Documents check at 3 different JR Station.

Saw today at Tokyo station, Ueno and Akabane just in 2 hours policemen in civil cloth check documents. Funny thing is they are more interested in Asians as male as female. the civil clothes thing is pretty standard during golden week prep, they usually ramp up a week before big holidays. saw them at shinjuku south exit last month, one guy was pretending to buy a ticket at the machine while his partner stood by the trash cans watching.

the asian focus is real but it's also about looking lost or out of place. if you walk with purpose and know where you're going they'll prob ignore u. i keep my zairyu card in my phone case now, easier than fumbling for a wallet when they stop u at the ticket gates.

yeah that's pretty normal honestly. the cops do random document checks around major stations especially during golden week or年末年始 when they're on high alert. akabane is a bit random though, usually see them more at shinjuku or ikebukuro.

they definitely profile based on appearance, it's not a secret. if you're asian but look foreign they'll stop you way more than a japanese person walking right past them. just keep your residence card or passport handy if you're gonna be near stations.

akabane is actually a pretty common spot for this, not random at all. there's a big korean town in the area and a lot of foreign workers live around there so cops hang out at the station entrance near the east exit. i've gotten stopped there twice just walking from the south exit to the taxi stand.

the profiling thing is real but it's not just about looking foreign. they're also checking for people who look nervous or avoid eye contact. i've seen them let obviously foreign guys pass because they just walked by normally while stopping a japanese guy who was glancing around too much. just keep your card in your wallet and act bored, works every time.

Tokyo rent 2026: what are you actually paying?

Is a decent 1LDK still around 120,000 yen in places like Setagaya or Nakano, or has it crept closer to 150,000? And which areas near good bakeries like Levain are still worth the commute?

I pay 128,000 for a 1LDK in Nakano, five minutes from the station, and I moved in last spring. Setagaya has crept up more because of the redevelopment around Futako-Tamagawa. For Levain bread, I'd look at Sasazuka or Daitabashi, one stop from Shinjuku, quieter, and you can walk to the bakery on weekends.

Worth checking the Nanpeidai side too, quiet but close.

Sangenjaya, 138,000 for a 1LDK.

138k tracks for that side of town, though the walk to Komazawa-dori is what really keeps those units priced where they are.
