Scammed in grocery store?

Hi, so I just bought a few things for 700, I'm 99% positive I've paid with a 10 000 bill and only got back 300. I tried to explain to the lady that there is money missing but she kept pointing to the 1000 on the receipt.

There seems to be a camera above the counter. What can I do in this situation?

Yeah, check your wallet and your other pockets first, that's step one. But if it's truly gone, don't go back alone. Take a Japanese-speaking friend or write down exactly what you said and what she said, in Japanese. The police here won't do much unless you have proof, but a formal complaint (keisatsu ni sodan) can pressure the store to review the CCTV. Also, ask for the レシート and look at the time stamp, the store can match it to the register's cash count from that day. If they did a till check at closing, the extra 9000 will show up, and that's your evidence. One thing I'd add: this is rare at big chains like Life or Ito-Yokado, they train staff to count the bill out loud on the tray. If this was a smaller mom-and-pop place, they might not have a proper system, and it's more likely an honest mistake, but the manager can still pull the tape for that register. Don't let it go, but don't yell either. Being calm and firm with the 店長 usually gets you further than making a scene.

honestly this happens sometimes at small shops but if it was a big chain like a supermarket with a proper register, the till wouldve shown a 10000 bill inserted. go back tomorrow morning, ask for the manager or 店長, not the same lady. they can check the camera or the register tape for the actual bill type. if that fails, call the police, non emergency is fine, they take petty theft reports and the store will usually fold once cops show up. also check ur own wallet first, i've done that before and it was in my other pocket lol

if the receipt shows 1000 then she mightve just made a mistake reading the bill, happens more than you'd think with the older staff here. the camera thing is real but stores usually wont pull it unless the police ask. what i'd do is hit up the お客様相談室 or customer service counter if it's a bigger place, they have a different system than the cashier and can check the 釣り銭 (change) drawer balance from that shift. also worth asking if they do a 締め (closing count) every day, most do, and if the drawer's over by 9000 theyve basically admitted it without needing cctv. if they play dumb, ask for the 警察 to come, not to accuse her but to file a lost money report, that gets their attention way faster than arguing at the register. and yeah double check ur coat pockets, i once found a 5000 note in a jacket i hadn't worn in months lol

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
