Hello, me and my friend are planning on making burgers, and we're wondering where we can find pure ground beef in Tokyo.

All the supermarkets around me only stock beef mixed with pork, which makes really bad burgers imo. I've heard some people online say that Costco might have some, but I live really far away so I want to make sure they have it and there's not a better way to get some before I take a multiple hour long trip to Kawasaki.

Most places online also require you to spend a lot of money to order. I'd really rather not spend 8000 yen to get 3 kilos of ground beef when we only really need like, 500 grams lol.

If I go to a butcher and ask for ground beef, would they be able to do that? I'm not sure how that kind of stuff works here.

Do you guys have any other suggestions, or know where I can go? Thanks!

yeah a butcher will def do that for you, just say "gyuniku no hikiniku wo kudasai" and they'll grind it fresh. most meat shops in residential areas are used to this, just ask for 500g and they wont bat an eye. theres a good one near meguro station called nakajima seikaten, they speak basic english too if ur worried about the language thing

costco ground beef is good but honestly not worth the trip for 500g unless you want to stock up on other stuff. their packs are like 1.5kg minimum anyway so you'd be freezing half of it

also check gyomu super if you have one nearby, they sell pure beef in 500g packs for like 400-500 yen. not the best quality but fine for burgers. the one in gotanda usually has it

meat guy guy near shinjuku called kanematsu honpo does custom grinding too, theyre a proper butcher not a supermarket. just tell them what you need and they'll do it while you wait. their beef quality is way better than costco for burgers tbh

also for a quick fix, national azabu in hiroo has pure beef packs but youll pay like 800 yen for 300g which isnt great value. still cheaper than that 8k delivery though

if youre near ueno, the ameyoko market butchers will grind it fresh for like 600 yen per 500g. just point at what you want and theyll handle it

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
