I don't watch baseball, but these Shohei Ohtani ads everywhere are driving me insane. Is he actually good at baseball or just famous because he's from Japan?

Can someone explain this phenomena to me? He was paid 700 million dollars? Is he some kind of super star or something? Can someone explain this phenomena to me? He was paid 700 million dollars? Is he some kind of super star or something?

the 700 million is spread out over like 10 years with a lot of it deferred, but even then he's worth it. what people outside baseball don't realize is he's literally changing how the game is played. teams are now trying to find their own two-way players because of him. you'll see kids all over tokyo practicing both pitching and batting now at the little league fields in yoyogi park. the ads are just the cherry on top

oh yeah he's legitimately insanely good, like historically good. he's a top tier pitcher AND a top tier hitter, which basically no one has done at that level since like babe ruth. the 700 million is a bit of a meme cause a lot of it is deferred payments but still, he's probably the best baseball player alive rn

Yeah he's genuinely that good. The short version is nobody in modern baseball has been an elite pitcher and an elite hitter at the same time. It's like finding someone who can play goalkeeper for a Champions League team and also lead the league in goals. The 700 million contract is insane but he's also bringing in a ton of money for the Dodgers through jersey sales and ad revenue, so from a business side it kind of makes sense. The ads are everywhere because Japanese companies know he's the one celebrity virtually everyone in the country actually likes, no controversy attached.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
