I have been to Akihabara etc, but mostly I just saw the Gundam figures that seem to be models to be displayed but not to play with as they look quite fragile. My nephew is 6 years old. I guess he likes the Gundam robots, but are there action figures available as well? It should be the typical thing with some moving body parts, weapons to change etc etc. (Like the he man stuff or ninja turtles back in the old days) I did research, but action figure seems to be used as a synonym for those model figures :/

yeah so the thing with Gundam is there's a whole line of actual action figures called Gundam Universe or Robot Damashii that are fully posable and come with swappable weapons, not the snap-together model kits. They're sold at most toy stores here but the selection at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara is solid, just head to the 5th floor where they keep the actual action figures section separate from the model kits

also if he's into Kamen Rider or Super Sentai (that's the Power Rangers source material) those figures are way more durable and designed for rough play, they're everywhere at Don Quijote too. the Donki in Akihabara has a whole aisle of them for like 1500-2000 yen each, and they come with little weapons and armor pieces that click on and off

fwiw the secondhand shops are great but for a gift you want new in box, the toy floor at Bic Camera in Shinjuku is probably your best bet on a monday since they open at 10am and have a huge selection of kid-targeted stuff that's not just display pieces

Honestly, for a 6-year-old who wants actual posable toys with accessories, check out the secondhand shops like Mandarake or Book Off in Akihabara. They have bins of loose action figures from stuff like Power Rangers or Kamen Rider that are way more sturdy and meant for play, not just display. Way cheaper too, and your nephew can swap weapons around.

You could try the toy floors at places like Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera in Akihabara, they have a big section of actual posable action figures from stuff like Kamen Rider or Ultraman that are meant for kids, not just the build-it-yourself Gundam models.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
