Is it possible to enter Costco without being a member to see how the store looks like? Do they ask for the membership card at the entrance or at the cashier? Can you visit the store before signing up?

honestly you can just walk right in at the Makuhari or Kawasaki locations, nobody checks at the entrance. they only ask for your card at the register so you can totally wander around and check out the layout, the food court even lets you order without a membership if you want to try a hot dog or pizza slice. just tell the cashier you're thinking about signing up and they'll let you browse no problem

tbh the membership check is only at checkout so you're free to walk around. the food court is the best part imo, you can grab a 500 yen hot dog combo without a card at most locations. just be ready for the crowds on weekends, the Kawasaki one gets insane around noon

yeah you can just walk in to browse but gotta be a member to buy anything. they check cards at the register not the door so you're fine to look around

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
