Hi, we're currently in Tokyo and I saw some people wear some kind of modern street ware with traditional cuts and designs on them.

Like some Haori-style shirts or jackets. Or pants with older style cuts (tight around the lower legs, more loose on the upper legs).

So I'm searching for something similar like this https://japan-clothing.com/collections/haori?srsltid=AfmBOoqVcBpOgXcMSMNJWHl3KEWFYZtIt1lvyCTkhTwwp_j_G66S6e8W. Maybe a bit more subtle.

I already went to multiple Kimono/Yukata stores but they ofc only had traditional haoris. Also Uniqlo and Don Quichote got nothing similar (tried in Asakusa).

So, does anybody know of any stores where one can buy such clothing for a reasonable price? (We found one small designer store in Asakusa which had T-Shirts with Yukata-esque sleeves, but it did costs over 20k yen.)

Thanks in advance! :)

for that specific look, check out kapital or visvim if u can find them in second hand shops like 2nd street, theyre pricey new but used ones pop up around 15k sometimes. also, the "made in japan" section at beams in shibuya has some subtle haori style overshirts with modern cuts, around 12k, not the loud sashiko stuff. if u want cheaper, hit up the flea markets at oi racecourse on weekends, tons of vintage workwear that u can just style looser, nobody will know the difference. oh and the "komehyo" in shinjuku has a decent curated rack of japanese brands, less chaotic than ragtag imo

The places I'd add are Ginza's "Sou Sou" and "Kojima" stores, they do modern takes on traditional workwear, think haori with zippers or clean-lined pants with that tapered cut. Prices are a bit higher, maybe 15k to 25k for a jacket, but the fabric quality is solid. If you're after a bargain, check out the "RagTag" chain, they have used designer stuff and you can sometimes find exactly that style for half the price.

Try heading to Shimokitazawa, specifically the narrow streets around the station. Stores like Jalana or Vagabond carry exactly that mix, modern cuts with traditional fabrics, and you'll find haori-style jackets around 10k to 15k yen. For pants, check out the shop "NUMBER NINE" near the north exit, they do tapered trousers with a wider hip that feel like a modern take on momohiki.

If you're willing to go a bit further, Koenji's "Chicago" and "Flamingo" second-hand shops often have vintage indigo or sashiko pieces that you can layer with modern basics, and they're way cheaper than new designer stuff. Also, don't sleep on the basement floors of Isetan in Shinjuku, they have a "modern kimono" section that's subtle, not costumey, and prices start around 8k for shirts.

Are there community garden things around places like Common Place that meet weekly and are open to foreigners? Would rather commit to something recurring than keep doing tourist events.

Check the ward-run shimin noen in Koto and Adachi, they run Saturday morning plots and welcome non-Japanese residents. Also look at city farming volunteer boards at the kuyakusho, some groups meet every week and ask for a small annual fee.

Common Place in Yoyogi hosts a monthly garden volunteer day, not weekly, so check their board. For weekly stuff, the Setagaya community garden groups near Sangenjaya are welcoming to foreigners.

Good shout on the monthly one, and Nakano's ward runs a weekly gardening circle that takes foreign residents too, I think you just sign up at the shimin center.
