Commute Advice: Nishi-Ojima to Futako-Tamagawa (Den-en-Toshi/Hanzomon Line), Gate Transfer?

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

honestly that shibuya transfer is a hike but if you time it right it's not terrible. the hanzomon line side lets you out near the tokyu department store entrance, and if you walk on the left side of the main corridor you'll hit the den-en-toshi gates faster - most people drift right toward hikarie. the real trick is getting on the right car on the hanzomon line so you come up near stairs instead of escalators, the escalator queues at rush hour are insane. nishi-ojima to futako-tamagawa is about 55-60 mins depending, and the den-en-toshi section after shibuya has that weird express/local thing where some trains skip komazawa-daigaku so double check the display before boarding

That Shibuya transfer is one of the more annoying ones in Tokyo. The Hanzomon and Den-en-toshi lines are run by different companies (Tokyo Metro vs Tokyu) so the platforms are at opposite ends of the station. You'll walk through the entire underground concourse past Shibuya Hikarie. If you're doing this daily, the morning inbound direction is worse because the Den-en-toshi fills up fast from the start at Chuo-rinkan. I'd try to position yourself near the front of the Hanzomon train so you come up closer to the Toei exit side, which shaves a minute off the walk.

yeah that's the hanzomon to den-en-toshi connection at shibuya, you walk through the whole station basically. coming up from the hanzomon line platforms you go up to the central ticket gate area then down to the den-en-toshi side, it's like 5-7 mins if you know where you're going. the transfer is within the fare gates so you don't tap out, just follow the signs for the tokyu lines. nishi-ojima to futako-tamagawa is gonna be about 55 mins or so, the hanzomon section is fine but the den-en-toshi gets packed after shibuya especially in the morning, try to snag a seat before shibuya if you can

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
