Are there any places that get really foggy when it rains?

I really miss the fog, and I just wondering if there's any places around Tokyo that get really foggy when it rains. I work a very busy job, and I rarely have time to research this type of thing. If you can make it out to the Tama River in the western suburbs, the riverbed gets this thick ground fog on rainy mornings, especially around the Hamura or Akishima areas. It's not as dramatic as mountain fog, but it settles low over the gravel banks and the water, and the train tracks on the JR Ome Line run right alongside it. You can just stand on the station platform and watch it roll in, no hiking required.

honestly if you want fog without going too far, try the Meguro River on a drizzly evening. the whole stretch from Nakameguro down to the canal near Shinagawa gets this soft mist hovering over the water, especially when the streetlights hit it. it's not thick mountain fog but more of a moody urban haze that makes everything feel like a movie scene. plus you're right in the city so no travel time, just walk down from Meguro station and you'll see it

Head up to Okutama on a rainy day. The mountains around Lake Okutama get completely socked in with fog, especially in the morning. You can take the Ome Line out to Okutama Station and walk toward the lake, it's about a 15 minute walk. The whole valley turns into this quiet gray world, it's nothing like the city.

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
