こんにちはみなさん。

I have quite a peculiar situation and I'd greatly appreciate if anyone has any info/ recommendations for this.

I used to live in Japan until end of 2021 and before leaving, I had cancelled my mobile subscription with a major phone provider. Everything is going well until a few weeks ago I received an email from a lawyer's office saying that they represent this company for non-payments of mobile bills.

I was confused because I had cancelled my subscriptions. When I contact the mobile provider, they said that I haven't paid my mobile fees until June 2022 which is 9 months after I left Japan.

I'd like to contest this unjust fees. I have contacted the law help hotline in Tokyo but they said if I live abroad there's nothing they can do.

I'm thankful for any tips/ recommendations! :)

huh, that's a messy situation. honestly, the lawyer's office is probably just doing a debt collection loop, they send these to anyone with a Japanese address on file. first thing, check if you actually had a two-year contract or a "2年縛り" plan, those auto-renew and sometimes don't fully cancel even if you think you did. you might've been charged for the remaining months plus a cancellation fee.

since you're abroad, your best bet is to write a formal letter (内容証明郵便 is ideal but you can't do that from overseas easily) directly to the provider's consumer affairs department, not the lawyer. state your departure date, the cancellation confirmation if you have it, and demand they stop the claim. also file a complaint with the 消費者庁 (Consumer Affairs Agency) online, they do handle cross-border stuff and can pressure the company.

if the lawyer keeps pushing, ask them to prove you used the service after your departure date. they can't, because there's no usage record. that usually kills the claim. don't pay anything until they show that proof. and check your old bank account or credit card, if they auto-charged you after you left, that's on them, not you.

The debt collection angle here is real, but there's another thing to check: your old bank account or credit card. If the provider kept charging you after you left, check if those payments actually went through. If they did, that's your proof you were being billed for a service you weren't using, and it makes their claim look weak.

You can also try contacting the provider's main office directly in Japanese, not the lawyer. Ask for the "契約内容の確認" and specifically request the call logs or data usage records for the months they claim you owe. They can't fabricate those, and if there's no activity after your departure date, they usually drop it.

One more option: the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has a consultation counter for foreign residents, but they might redirect you to the Japan Legal Support Center (法テラス). Even if they can't represent you abroad, they can give you a referral to a private lawyer who handles cross-border disputes. It'll cost a bit, but a single well-worded letter from a Japanese lawyer often makes these claims disappear fast.

honestly the lawyer is probably just fishing, they buy up old claims and send letters hoping someone panics and pays. the real move is to ask for the itemized bill showing exactly what dates and amounts they claim, in writing. if they cant produce that, tell them to pound sand. also check if your old provider sent anything to your old address in japan, maybe a friend or your old sharehouse can grab it for u, sometimes there's a termination notice you missed that changes everything.

Best aquarium in Tokyo 2026: Ocean Center worth it?

Any recs for a clinic near Shinagawa that takes national health insurance, and what a walk-in visit usually runs? Also, is the aquarium actually worth the ticket price in 2026 or should we just do Sunshine Aquarium instead?

Sunshine Aquarium is the better rainy-day pick with kids, and Maxell Aqua Park handles strollers easier than Ocean Center's ramps.

For the back, try a seikotsuin instead of a clinic, they take insurance and walk-ins run about 1,500 yen.

Ocean Center's penguin and jellyfish halls justify the price, but weekend seikotsuin slots fill fast so call ahead.
