I've seen this issue a lot with older OnePlus phones on linemo. The problem is that they rely on VoLTE for calls but don't properly register with docomo's IMS network, which is what linemo uses under the hood. SMS and data work because those use different network protocols that don't need that same certification.

You mentioned you set everything up already but double check that your APN is exactly "mvno.net" with the username and password fields left blank. Some OnePlus phones also have a hidden menu you can access by dialing ##4636## where you can try toggling "IMS registration" or "VoLTE provisioned" on and off. It usually doesn't work but I've seen it fix the issue for a handful of people.

If you're near an electronics district like Akihabara or Shinjuku, you could pick up a used Sony Xperia or a Pixel from the last couple years for around 10,000 to 20,000 yen. Those tend to have the proper docomo VoLTE profiles baked in and work with linemo out of the box.

yeah linemo is weird like that. they use a specific voLTE implementation that a lot of older phones just dont support properly. oneplus phones from that era especially had weird carrier configs and linemo is basically a virtual operator piggybacking on docomo's network, so the voLTE profile has to match exactly.

you could try forcing the phone into "wcdma only" mode in the network settings, that sometimes makes calls work on 3g fallback. go to settings > network > mobile network > preferred network type and pick 3g only. if that works you'll just have slower data during calls.

otherwise it's probably a lost cause tbh. the mvne spec for linemo requires specific ims registration that older android builds just dont have. you'd need a phone from the last 2-3 years that has proper docomo voLTE certification.

honestly the guide nailed it but i'd throw in nakameguro for anyone visiting in spring. the canal walk during cherry blossom season is insane, way less crowded than ueno or shinjuku gyoen. plus there's a killer onigiri spot called Onigiri Bongo that sells out by noon, and the area has a ton of tiny wine bars and vintage shops. rooms at the Claska hotel start around $120 and it's a quick hop to shibuya on the tokyu line

solid write-up, covers the big ones well. for my money, if you're a food nerd, staying near a good tsukemen or ramen spot is a legit strategy. i booked a hotel in takadanobaba once just cause i wanted to be walking distance from Taishoken, the tsukemen birthplace. that area is also full of student bars and cheap eats since Waseda Uni is there, rooms at the b:CONTE hotel run like $90 a night and it's two stops from Shinjuku on the Yamanote. way less tourist crush than Shibuya for late-night bowls

One thing I'd add for anyone staying in Shinjuku is that the station itself can be overwhelming even for locals, so picking a hotel on the west side near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is a good hack. The views from the free observation deck there are just as good as the paid ones, and you avoid the chaos of the east exit. For cheap eats in that area, the basement floor of Takashimaya department store has incredible takeout bento boxes under 1,000 yen that beat most convenience store meals.
