What is your experience being a tall woman in Japan?

I'm 5'11, do you get stared at? I'm 5'11, do you get stared at?

yeah the stares are real but it's not aggressive, more like they're just not used to seeing someone that tall. i'm 6'0 and i get asked if i play basketball constantly, like every week without fail. if you're in Harajuku on a weekend you'll stand out way less since there's a lot of fashion types who are taller than average

also watch out for those low hanging signs in Shimokitazawa, i've hit my head more times than i can count. for clothes i've had decent luck at Muji's online store, their sizes run a bit roomier than most places here

ngl the stares are a thing but it fades after a while, you kinda just get used to it. i'm 6'2 and the worst part isn't even the looks, it's the constant "sumo wrestler" jokes from drunk salarymen in izakayas, like that's not even close to original

for clothes you should try Don Quijote in Ikebukuro, they have random plus size stuff mixed in with everything else and sometimes you get lucky. also if you're dating here good luck finding a guy who doesn't make it weird, most japanese men are shorter than you and some of them really can't handle it

honestly being 5'11 here is tough but not impossible. i'm 5'9 and i still get looks on the train, especially from older ladies. the key is finding stores that actually stock your size, uniqlo has some stuff online but their in-store tall sizes are rare. for shoes, i'd check out ABC Mart in Shibuya, they have a decent selection above size 25cm

stares happen but it's more curious than mean, people just aren't used to it. if you're in Shinjuku or Roppongi you'll prob blend in better since there's more foreigners. worst part is bumping your head on door frames in older restaurants, that's a real thing

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
