Where to buy specialty coffee beans in bulk?

I'm looking to buy about 30-40 pounds of high quality specialty beans from Tokyo. Any recommendations for that quantity? I only have 2 days in Tokyo so will need to be something in stock. consider hitting up switch coffee in jingumae, they have a direct-trade program and can sell you 10kg bags of their single origins if you email them a day ahead. their ethiopian is the best ive had in tokyo for that price point, around 2500 yen per kilo. just make sure you contact through their website form cause the shop staff might not know about wholesale stock unless its been arranged

for that volume you're better off hitting a wholesaler like post coffee in kiyosumi-shirakawa or fuglen in shibuya, they usually have bulk bags set aside for cafes but will sell to anyone if you ask at the counter. call ahead the day before to confirm stock since 30-40 lbs is a lot for a single shop, most roasters keep maybe 10-15 lbs of each origin ready. if you're near tokyo station, kohta coffee in nihonbashi also does 5kg sacks of their house blend, just bring cash or card since they're not always set up for big transactions

try nozy coffee in jingumae, they roast in pretty big batches and usually have 2kg bags of their single origins sitting out. just call ahead to reserve since they'll need to pull from their wholesale stock which isn't always on display. also worth checking obscura coffee in ginza, they do a 5kg bag of their seasonal blend that's really consistent, i've seen shops buy that exact bag for their house drip

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
