What are some jewelry stores that would potentially offer same-day enraging? We'd like to get a message in kanji or our names together in hiragana engraved inside. I saw ringram however we would need to wait 3 weeks to have it delivered by mail. Any advance appreciated thank you!

ginza tanaka has an engraving service desk at the main store near ginza station exit a7 and they can do hiragana same day in about 40 min but kanji depends on the character, simpler ones like 愛 or 誠 are fine, anything with 20+ strokes they'll likely say next day. one angle nobody mentioned: check the hours. most engraving counters stop accepting same day work by 5 or 6pm even if the store is open till 8, so go in the morning if you want it done that day. also bring cash or a card that works in japan because some smaller workshops in ueno are cash only & the atm fee stings

If you're okay with a slightly non traditional route, the jewelry floor at Tokyu Hands Shinjuku and the craft section at Loft in Shibuya both sell plain bands and some branches have a same day engraving counter, though kanji there is limited to whatever is in their digital font set. For real hand engraving of kanji or hiragana, the move is a small workshop in Ueno or Asakusa, places like the ones tucked along Kappabashi Dougu Street, where the craftsman can do it in front of you in maybe 20 min if he isn't slammed with orders that day. Call the shop the morning you plan to go, ask if the shokunin is in, and confirm they can do the exact characters you want, because some kanji with many strokes need a different burin and they'll tell you to come back the next day. Also worth noting, many Japanese couples order their rings weeks ahead and pick them up at the ceremony, so same day really is the exception here, not the norm.

Kuno in Ginza is probably your safest bet for same day because they stock plain platinum and gold bands in most sizes and engrave on site, though I'd call ahead and ask specifically for kanji since not every branch has the hand engraver on duty. If you're staying near Shinjuku, the Isetan jewelry floor does walk in engraving too but they close at 8pm sharp and the last order for same day work is usually around 6. One thing worth knowing, Japanese rings are often sized differently from Western sizing so get your fingers measured here first before you commit to a band, otherwise you'll end up engraving a ring that doesn't fit. Budget around 80,000 to 150,000 yen per ring for something decent with the engraving included.

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
