I am a student with no income and I don't live in a fancy area or district either, isn't the NHI supposed to be like around 30000?

The 65,000 figure is probably the full annual premium before the student reduction gets applied. NHI in Tokyo is calculated on your previous year's income (前年所得), so if you worked any part-time job in 2024 and earned above roughly 1 million yen, you'd get billed as a normal resident even though you're a student now. If your income was genuinely zero, go to your ward office and ask specifically about the 学生納付特例 and 減免 systems. You often have to apply for these yourself, they don't get applied automatically, and the reduction can bring it down to around 10,000 to 20,000 for the year. Bring your student ID and a copy of your 在留カード, and if you filed a 確定申告 showing zero income that helps a lot.

65k sounds like they might have billed u for the full year without the 減免 applied yet, but also double check ur 賦課基準額 on the notice, sometimes a part time gig from two years back still counts. if u were claimed as a dependent on someone's 扶養 that can mess with it too, worth asking the ward office to recalc

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
