How much do you make as an Assistant Language Teacher?

I have an opportunity to be an ALT at a young children's school that makes 1400/hr (transport paid).

I know that the general consensus is you don't make much, especially at a children's school, but just curious what the average pay is for an ALT in Tokyo is.

Any advice, etc, for other good opportunities?

Thanks.

1400 is pretty standard for dispatch companies tbh. my first ALT job was 1500/hr but that was in the burbs, not central Tokyo. the transport paid bit is key though, some places deduct that from your paycheck so you're actually making less.

the real money in ALT work comes from direct hire with BOEs. those start around 250k-280k a month for a 35 hour week, plus summer and winter breaks paid. they're rare though, usually require a few years experience and japanese ability.

if you're set on kids, check out the smaller eikaiwa chains in Kichijoji or Shimokitazawa. they sometimes pay 1800-2000 for native speakers with a bit of experience. also don't sleep on the international preschools in Minato, they pay decent but the hours are rough.

honestly 1400/hr is on the lower end for Tokyo alts. most dispatch companies start around 1500-1600 for the 23 wards, and direct hire gigs can hit 2000-2500 if you're lucky. the young kids part is rough too, lots of energy and little english.

if you want better pay, look into private eikaiwa or international school assistant roles. some of the bigger chains like ECC or AEON pay more consistent hours. also check out the BOE direct hire postings on sites like OhayoSensei or GaijinPot, they pop up a few times a year.

one thing about 1400 is that transport paid is nice but still tight in Tokyo. after tax and health insurance you're looking at around 200k a month if you work full time. that's doable if you share a place in Suginami or Adachi but not much savings room.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
