Hey everyone,

I'm a beginner DJ and will be spending the next two months in Tokyo. I'm moving there to focus on myself and my passions, including DJing.

Are there any DJs in Tokyo who'd be open to connecting? I don't know Japanese (learning a bit), but I'm eager to learn, mix, and practice as much as possible. I'm looking forward to a change of scenery and new experiences!

Thanks in advance!

honestly the best way to get into the scene here is to just go to record shops and talk to the staff. disk union in shinjuku has a whole floor of dance music and the older guys working there know everyone. also manhattan records in koenji is super chill and they sometimes have little in-store sessions on weekends

if you're into house or techno, the sunday afternoon parties at forestlimit in shimokitazawa are a good entry point. super relaxed vibe, people are actually there to listen and chat about music instead of just getting drunk. and the owner speaks english well

one thing nobody mentions is that a lot of small bars in shimokita or kichijoji have dj booths but no one playing on weeknights. if you make friends with the owner they'll sometimes let you mess around on the gear when its empty. just be respectful and buy a drink or two

yeah theres a decent scene here honestly. if you're in shibuya check out contact or vent, they have open deck nights sometimes for beginners. also wild pitch in shinjuku is worth keeping an eye on, lot of international djs pass through there and the crowd is pretty friendly to newcomers.

don't stress too much about not knowing japanese yet, most of the club staff and regulars speak enough english to get by. just show up early when its quieter and introduce yourself to the sound guys, they're usually happy to chat about gear and let you see the booth setup.

also if you want to practice without pressure, there's a few cheap rental studios in koenji that have cdjs. like 1500 yen an hour last i checked. way better than trying to practice in your apartment with headphones.

oh also check out the meetup app, there's a tokyo dj group that does casual jam sessions at a studio in nakano like once a month. super low pressure, all levels welcome, and people usually hang around after to chat about tracks and gear

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
