Hey everyone,

(repost since someone totally ruined it before)

I lived in a share house called "Teachers Lodge" until 2016, where I shared a room with three others for ¥19,000 a month (that place existed for 20 years). I'm curious if similar accommodations are still available in Tokyo? Could be impossible, or not. Maybe someone made similar experiences and knows of any places? XRoss House has rooms for ¥35,100 if anyone's wondering (that's under $400)

Edit: for more backstory:

What was so special about that place? It was partly an old building, over 80 years old, and partly a DIY addition, with walls artistically painted by former residents; each corridor looked different. We had a generous green garden with a small wooden garden house. It was not well-maintained, quite the opposite. There were many cockroaches and occasionally mice, holes in the walls, and mysterious stains. But what the house had was charm and a story. The people who lived there were my friends, and the former roommates always came back to visit; there was an inexplicable bond between the people and the house. It accommodated 40 people, and the owner always ensured a 50/50 balance. This was my first time in Tokyo, where I made great friends who significantly helped me, ultimately contributing to a successful career. It's a fond memory; I find myself romanticizing it and wishing the place still existed.

(because someone kindly pointed out that this sub is just for ppl living in Tokyo; yes, i do. Im not actively looking for a new place but would be a nice option since I don't care about comfort and paying much for it. I'm 34 he assumed I'm over 40 😢🤣)

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
