With 3500 yen you can get out pretty far if you're smart about it. From Shinjuku, take the Chuo Line to Takao and then switch to the Keio Takao Line, which gets you to Takaosanguchi for about 1200 yen round trip. You won't get a ton farther on that budget, but the hike up Mount Takao is solid and you can see Fuji on a clear day.

If you want something more unique, try going to Odawara from Tokyo Station for around 1500 yen each way on the Tokaido Line. Odawara Castle is worth a look and the area has a nice old town feel. With the remaining 500 yen you can grab a kamaboko fish cake snack from one of the shops near the station.

The farthest you could realistically push is to Atami on the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station, but that's about 3500 yen one way so you'd be stuck there unless you take a local train back. The local route from Tokyo to Atami on the Tokaido Line is about 2200 yen each way, which eats up your whole budget.

3500 yen gets you to Nikko from Shinjuku on the Tobu line if you take the limited express. Round trip on the basic train is about 2700 yen, then you've got 800 left for a yuba bowl at one of the places near the station. The shrines and the Kegon waterfall are worth seeing, though you'd need extra cash for bus fare up to the falls themselves.

If you don't mind a longer ride, go to Chichibu from Ikebukuro on the Seibu line. It's around 1500 yen each way on the limited express, so you'd be cutting it close. Chichibu Shrine is nice and the area has a quiet mountain feel, plus there's a good soba shop called Sobadokoro Hisada near the station that fits in your leftover yen.

For something coastal, take the Keikyu line from Shinagawa to Misaki Park. It's about 1500 yen each way and you can walk around the fishing port or see the aquarium for 700 yen. You'd have just enough for a bowl of maguro don at one of the stalls near the harbor.

honestly for that budget i'd take the odakyu line from shinjuku to hakone-yumoto. it's about 2300 yen round trip on the romancecar if you catch the right one, or you can do it cheaper on local trains for like 1800 round trip. the open air museum is 1600 yen admission so you'd be over with the romancecar, but just wandering around the onsen town and hitting the free foot baths is a solid day. the soba at shinonome near the station is decent and under 800 yen for a bowl

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
