In any case, the form I got says I have to take some class or watch some kind of safety video or something before renewal. Anyone here ever done it or know what to expect?

yeah i did this last year at the Fuchu license center, same deal with two minor tickets. it's not bad honestly, just a 2 hour video in a room with like 30 other people all in the same boat. they show you accident footage and go over the rules again, pretty boring but you can zone out. bring a book or your phone for the wait time before it starts, the check-in line can take a while. make sure you have your license, the blue form they mailed you, and the 1,350 yen fee in cash, they dont take card there.

I did mine at the driver's license center in Shinagawa. It was basically a big room with a projector, they show you some pretty graphic crash footage and a guy reads through the traffic laws for a while. Just sit there for two hours, they take attendance a couple times, and you get your new license stamped at the end. Bring cash for the fee and a pen to fill out the forms.

honestly it's just a long boring video, nothing to stress about. the one at Samezu in Shinagawa had these hard plastic chairs that made my back ache after an hour, so maybe bring a small cushion if you're picky. they do a quick written test at the end for like 10 minutes, but it's super basic stuff like what a stop sign means. the whole thing felt like a driver's ed class from high school, just with more middle aged guys who looked annoyed to be there

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
