If using longer & inconvenient routes, is it possible to get in any place within Greater Tokyo (all of the Kanto, excluding rural areas & detouched towns) riding only buses & never urban railways - like, at all? One of the rules in urban gamin

honestly yeah you could prob do it if you're dedicated. the bus network in tokyo is surprisingly deep once you get past the yamanote line bubble. toei buses alone cover a ton of shinjuku to sumida area routes, and then you've got the private ones like kanachu down toward yokohama or seibu buses out west.

the annoying part is the gaps between bus operators and the timetables. like going from setagaya to kawasaki is fine on bus but crossing the arakawa river north of tokyo station gets messy. you'd be waiting 30-40 mins at some random stop in adachi for a transfer that barely connects. also some routes end at 8pm so your window is tight.

if you're doing this as a challenge thing i'd map it out on google maps with the transit filter set to bus only. it'll show u some wild detours like going through saitama to loop around a train line. definitely doable but you'll spend more time waiting than riding

Yeah, it's possible but the real headache is the highway buses. You'd think they'd help bridge gaps, but most of them leave from major stations like Shinjuku or Tokyo Station and don't let you hop on at random local stops. So you end up stuck taking local buses that run every 20 minutes on a good day.

The western side from Hachioji out to Sagamihara is actually decent for bus coverage because the train lines are further apart. But try going from say, Matsudo in Chiba to Soka in Saitama and you'll find yourself walking across prefectural borders because the bus routes just stop at the river. There's a bridge but no bus that uses it.

Your best bet is to stick to the 23 wards and use the Toei bus network as your backbone. They have a hub at Shinjuku Station's west exit that connects to about a dozen routes going in every direction. Just check the last bus times carefully because some of those routes end at 7pm on Sundays.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
