oh man the yanaka tip is solid. if you're into street portraits hit up golden gai late evening, the bar owners are usually down for a quick shot and the neon signs look killer on film. also check out tokyo camera club on instagram, they do meetups around random stations every couple weekends

yo welcome to tokyo. if you're into analog check out nakano camera on the 3rd floor of nakano broadway, they've got a solid used film section and the old guy there knows his stuff. also the shimokitazawa flea markets on weekends are gold for finding random cameras and cheap film if you're patient. i'd say hit yoyogi park on a sunday afternoon, the light through the trees is nice and there's always weird characters to shoot

honestly the analog scene here is pretty solid for meeting people. there's a monthly film swap meet at 2.5D in koenji, next one is first saturday of the month. lots of folks your age trading gear and talking shop, way more social than just wandering alone

if you want to shoot something different, try the yanaka ginza area around sunset. narrow streets, old buildings, cats everywhere. the light hits different against all the wood and tile. plus there's a tiny cafe called kayaba coffee that's been around since the 30s, good spot to refill and chat with other photographers

also fwiw a lot of us post on the tokyo film photographers facebook group when we're heading out. might be worth joining just to see who's shooting when

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
