Is Shimada Ruins worth visiting in 2026?

Just a fenced excavation plot, not a visitor site.

i think theres not much to see even if u make the trip, so maybe skip it & spend the day in Nara instead

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Fair point, and honestly a half day at the ruins tops. Maybe pair it with a stop nearby instead of making it the whole outing.

arrow_drop_up -1 arrow_drop_down

yeah agreed, and the access is the killer. it's out past the Kintetsu line toward Kashihara, so you'd burn half a day on trains to stare at a fence. better off using that rail pass for somewhere with actual standing buildings.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

True, though if you're already headed that way the Shimada area does have some decent kofun mounds worth a quick look

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Agreed, and Nara's deer alone beat a fenced dirt lot.

Best banking options in Osaka 2026 for short stays

Is a Japan Post account still the easiest for a foreigner to open near Uetsujima, or should I just use my home card and eat the ATM charges? Also curious how people get paid if they pick up part time work there.

Seven Bank ATMs in 7-Elevens take foreign cards and the fees are lower than most bank ATMs, so a home card isn't the worst fallback. For part time pay, lots of places want a Japanese bank account for payroll, so factor that in.

arrow_drop_up 19 arrow_drop_down

Payroll often needs a hanko registered too.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

inker stamp at the counter, 300 yen or so

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

yeah, post office is the fallback for payroll

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

fair point but payroll setup can drag on for weeks so ask ur employer about timing before u rely on it

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

also check the daily withdrawal cap on ur home card, mine was 50k yen which got old fast

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

Agreed on the fallback point. The catch is international cards often get blocked for online purchases in Japan, so you'd still want a local account for anything billed monthly. What did your employer actually ask for, just an account number or a full passbook copy?

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Sony Bank's English signup is fully online and the cash card doubles as a debit card, no branch visit needed.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Worth noting the online signup still needs a My Number card or residence card upload, which trips up people arriving before their zairyu card is issued.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yucho still easiest, uetsujima branch opens 9am
