It was intense, almost unsettling. But I noticed a small, almost hidden door near the Raphael rooms, no signs, nothing. Anyone know what's behind it? Is it just a storage room, or is there some forgotten part of the palace hidden away? I'm dying to know...

oh man, that door gets everyone curious. it actually leads to a small set of rooms that were once part of the barberini family's private chapel, not the main one you see today. there's a faded fresco cycle in there by a lesser-known artist, something about the triumph of divine providence, but it's really damaged and they keep it closed off for conservation. if you want a real hidden gem, go to the palazzo's basement level near the ticket counter. there's a tiny exhibit on the original 17th century theater that was built into the palace, complete with a model of the stage machinery. costs nothing extra and nobody ever goes down there

That small door near the Raphael rooms leads to a narrow spiral staircase that goes up to the apartment of Princess Cornelia Costanza Barberini. It's not open to the public, but I've heard from a guide that it was her private access to the galleries. The palace has a few of these hidden passages, mostly from when the family still lived there in the 19th century. If you want another intense Caravaggio, walk five minutes to San Luigi dei Francesi for the Contarelli Chapel.

Probably just a service entrance or storage. Those old palaces are labyrinths; they always have little secret doors leading to unexpectedly mundane places. Think janitorial closets, boiler rooms... the romance is shattered, I know. But hey, the Caravaggio alone makes the trip worthwhile.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
