Fiore di Zucca's Secret?

The pasta was incredible, best carbonara I've ever had. But I noticed something... every table had a tiny, almost hidden, ceramic pumpkin next to the pepper grinder. What's the deal with those little pumpkins? Are they just decoration, or is there some sort of local tradition or inside joke I missed? I should of asked, but I was too busy enjoying my meal. Anyone know?

Those little pumpkins are a nod to the owner's family from Mantova, where zucca is basically a religion. The ceramic ones started as a joke among the staff years ago, something about the chef threatening to put pumpkin in everything, and regulars caught on and started bringing their own to leave on tables. If you go back, look closely at the bottom, some of them have initials or dates scratched in. It's less a tradition and more a superstitious habit that got out of hand, which honestly describes half of what happens in this city.

i think they're just a thing the owner does, tiny pumpkins from his family's patch down south, he swaps them out every season so no two visits have the same ones. not really a tradition, more like a signature, kinda like how some places leave a lil amaro on the table

The pumpkins are actually tied to the neighborhood, not the restaurant. That little stretch near Via del Moro has had a thing for zucca for ages, going back to when the market stalls there sold squash and the locals started keeping tiny ceramic ones for good luck. Fiore di Zucca just leaned into it. If you want the real story, ask the older guys at the bar two doors down, they'll talk your ear off about it.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
