Spent hours wandering the halls, mesmerized by Caravaggio's paintings, seriously, they were breathtaking. But I noticed a lot of the smaller rooms were kind of... dark? Like, intentionally dimly lit. Was that a stylistic choice, or is there some historical reason they're kept so shadowy? It felt a bit like exploring a hidden chamber! I should of taken more photos

Worth knowing those small rooms mostly held the family's private collection, and until the 1930s the palazzo was still a residence, not a museum. What you're seeing is partly the old lighting plan: the Barberini hung smaller works low and close to windows so a single lamp or shaft of daylight could pick them out. If you go again, ask at the desk about the Corsini wing, it has a similar gloom that's deliberate and rarely explained.

honestly a lot of those palazzo rooms were designed around candlelight and oil lamps, so the windows are small on purpose. the dimness is kinda original, museums just keep it low now to protect the paintings.

The dim lighting in those smaller rooms also comes down to the building itself. Palazzo Barberini sits on a slope, and the wing facing the garden has windows that barely catch direct light, so even by day the salons stay murky. If you want the contrast, go back and compare the Salone Pietro da Cortona on the piano nobile, which is flooded with light, against the little rooms off the west corridor. That difference was deliberate back then, public grandeur up front, quiet shadow for private apartments.

What are current tobacco prices for LM Blue or Chesterfield Blue?

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
