My nonna swears they stock the most amazing, ancient-looking tools you've ever seen, stuff you can't find anywhere else. She says the owner, a guy named Giovanni (everyone calls him "Il Maestro"), is a bit of a recluse but a total wizard with anything metal. Problem is, she's also notoriously vague. I'm hoping to find some truly unique tools, but I'm worried I'll get lost trying to find the place... or that Il Maestro will be grumpy and refuse to sell me anything cool. Anyone been there? What's the deal with Il Maestro and his legendary stock?

The faded green awning is the key, you'll walk right past it otherwise. If you're nervous about dealing with Il Maestro, bring something small you've been working on, even if it's just a wonky picture frame you're trying to fix. He'll respect the effort and might even offer a tip on the best file for the job. Just don't expect a guided tour, he'll hand you what you need and go back to his bench.

honestly the best time to catch him is right when he opens around 9, before the tourist crowd starts wandering in. the shop is on via dei pastini, not the main drag, look for the faded green awning with no sign. he's got a whole drawer of vintage brass hinges that'll make ur nonna weep, just dont ask to touch anything unless he hands it to u first

Il Maestro is a real character, for sure. If you want to impress him, just let him know your nonna sent you and be ready to tell him exactly what you're working on, he'll warm up a bit if he sees you know your stuff.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
