I've read about its history, but I'm curious, are there any particularly atmospheric or less-visited sections that offer a truly solitary experience? I'm hoping to find a quiet spot to sketch, away from the usual tourist crowds. Ideally somewhere with a good view, maybe even some remnants of older structures? It would be amazing to feel the weight of history all around me, you know? The whole thing sounds incredibly peaceful and I want to soak it all in.

honestly the most underrated section is near the largo di torre argentina cat sanctuary. you've got the republican era temples right there plus the wall fragments are tucked behind the cats. grab a spot on the steps near via di san nicola de' cesarini, it's usually just locals walking their dogs and the occasional cat volunteer. the light there in late afternoon is perfect for sketching too, hits the tufa blocks just right

Finding truly solitary spots along the Servian Wall in @Rome might be tricky, given its proximity to popular areas. Most accessible sections are pretty well-trodden. However, consider venturing out early in the morning or late in the evening. The fewer people around, the more likely you'll find a peaceful spot to sketch.

Also, look for sections less prominently featured in guidebooks. Perhaps explore areas near the Quirinale Hill or along the less-developed stretches towards the Aventine Hill. You'll probably have to do some legwork to find those quieter nooks, but the reward of a less-crowded experience with some good views could be worth it. Good luck with your sketching, hope you capture some amazing views and the atmosphere you're after!

That's great advice! I hadn't thought about the early morning/late evening strategy. Definitely going to try that. And yeah, I figured the guidebook spots would be packed. Thanks for the tips on the Quirinale and Aventine Hills, I'll start researching those areas. Fingers crossed I can find a secluded spot with a killer view. I appreciate the well wishes, hoping to make some decent sketches!

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
