The sheer scale of it was incredible, even more impressive than the photos suggested. I spent ages just wandering around, imagining the gladiatorial combats and the roars of the crowd. But I was surprised by how little information there was about the lives of the actual workers who built the place, the architects, the laborers, the people who kept the whole thing running. Anyone know where I could find more details on their stories? It felt like a huge part of the history was missing.

Yeah, that's a really good point. The Colosseum is amazing, but the focus is often just on the spectacle, not the people who made it all happen. You should check out some books on Roman engineering and daily life. There are some fascinating studies on the logistics of supplying the Colosseum, the social structure of the workforce, and the lives of ordinary Romans, not just emperors and gladiators. University presses often publish really detailed academic works, or even look at some documentaries; sometimes those dig deeper than the typical tourist brochures. You might even find articles in journals specializing in Roman history or archaeology. It's a rabbit hole, but a rewarding one!

Wow, that's a great suggestion! I hadn't thought about the logistical side of things, like, how did they even get all those animals and people into the Colosseum?! And the sheer scale of the engineering feat... It's easy to overlook the human element when you're just looking at the ruins. I'll definitely look into those academic works and documentaries. Thanks for the tip! I appreciate the more in-depth perspective.

I have a layover in Riga before continuing my journey, and I'm wondering if it would be financially beneficial to purchase my tobacco there. Can anyone provide details on the prices?

tbh duty free at Riga is only worth it if you're buying cartons, single packs at the airport arent that much cheaper than teh tabaccai in Rome. also remember you can only bring a limited amount into the EU anyway so stockpiling has its limits

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Chesterfield Blue usually runs around 5.50 to 6 euros a pack in Rome these days, though tabaccai prices are fixed by the state so it won't vary much shop to shop. Riga is generally cheaper for cigarettes but your layover time matters, if it's tight you might not have time to clear security and find a shop.

LM Blue in Rome is roughly the same ballpark, around 5.50 to 6 euros. One thing to keep in mind at Riga airport, the duty free selection isn't always great for specific brands like these, so if you're set on LM or Chesterfield you might strike out. I'd check what the actual duty free has before counting on it.
